An experience like that of Emilia Zapata, Colombian who in 2002 was diagnosed by bosom cancer. “I did an autoexamination to myself in the shower and discovered the little boll in the bosom.

— How was the chemotherapy?
“ It was a hard experience. I had my son I was in Colombia and my wish was to be able to bring it, for that it was saving and as the same it did not have medical insurance. The quimio was slightly hard because on the following day it had to go to work, but there were occasions that it could not because I was feeling very sick, in addition to the sickness and the vomiting, I lost the hair and began using perukes or turbans, also very much bones pain. When I finished the first part of the quimio I had to travel to Colombia because my son, who was ten years old, was living with my sister but his dad took it. Supposedly it was going for one week but it had me to remain for two months. With it I interrupted the chemotherapy but I solved the problem of my son. Then it began the radiation. In this stage it me was well, it was not drastic and in the end I began with the medicine. Not long ago I had my consultation with the oncologist and all good went out. Now I am satisfied and with desire to him say to the persons that there is treatment and there is help”.
— In what is it today?
“ I am a support partner and I have shared my experience with other patients, to whom I listen and deliver to them the good parts that I could extract and what helped me. During these six years I could have placed trust in many diagnosed. There are many who suffer for the nerves, the fear and the fact that the quimio gives many depression. Out of that if it has been diagnosed in the middle of some problem, more he will fall ill”.
— What is his message to the community?
“ I think that the most difficult part is when you have been evident something rare in your body and do not know what to do. My message to the women is that they have no fear, that they look for help because this one exists and there are many organizations and places where they can offer help be undocumented or not. The cancer is not a death sentence”.

For a few years for here, Mary's Center, with the support of the Office of Latin Matters of the Mayoralty of the District of Columbia has realizing a campaign in different Latin journalistic means on the damage that causes the alcohol, the tobacco and the drugs in a pregnant woman and in his baby.
Our interest with this campaign beyond showing the damages that these bad habits can cause in a mother during the epoch of gestation, it is to prepare any damage that this type of actions can cause in the development of the babies.
As center that looks over the pregnant women's health and over the good development of the children, we are worried enormously by the high numbers that are brought annually on the consumption of the alcohol, the cigaret and the drugs in the entire world and of course, in this country. For nothing we wanted to see these numbers reflected in our mothers-to-be.
Every day hundreds of women come to our center in search of care of the pregnancy and our work is to try the appropriate care so that this baby develops in the best conditions and his arrival to the world be triumphant.
For that it is important that the mother-to-be understands that during the pregnancy, she has to look after for two and that this baby who is in his belly shares his blood and is straight exposed to the alcohol and to the drugs that she completes during these months.
All the drugs – good is a prescribed medicines, medicines that are bought without recipe in the drugstore, illicit drugs, alcohol or cigarets - have risks. The small risks can still go joining and the damage is going to be for both but most of the times are major for the baby with consequences that can be for the whole life. The risks include from abortions in the woman up to damages in the vital organs of the baby causing physical and mental damages.
The ideal thing is to bring to the world planned children, for that we are waiting with love and illusion. That's why, when we think of having children, preparémonos in advance for this. It is recommended inclusive that if a woman thinks to have children, his abstinence of the alcohol, the tobacco or the drugs must begin from before the gestation since the vital organs of the baby begin forming before the first rule is missing, that is to say, immediately after it is conceived.
