To have access to newspapers, is a freedom. To have newspapers of good quality is a blessing. To read newspapers is a religion.
We are witnesses of the death of big newspapers of this nation. The sales of publicity in the big chains of communication have gone down more than the housings. The public schools do not teach to read and the students who graduate, join to the majority that gets the news for the television. Every day there increases the number of persons who enter the cybernetic network and leave the television and the newspapers. On all this, the costs of production, the role and the distribution keep on increasing vertiginously. In the present economic climate the solution to these problems disappears and the result is the closing, the sale and the bankruptcy.
Nowadays the information is so rapid and accessible that the newspapers, like the phone books or the catalogs, they are obsolete the same day that stops being printed. The advertisers, on having discovered that the big newspapers already do not produce the wished results, go to the network and to the newspapers that serve a niche on the market, such as the ethnic groups, the local communities, the show business and the sports.
Apart from the realities previously exposed, the present situation in which the big newspapers are has been caused by them. In England, nation of the first world, with the same facility and the same problems that have the United States, the press is in full climax. It is affected by the network, neither the low educational level of the masses, nor the television.
The difference is that the press in the Great Britain is independent and takes seriously his role of watchtower of the system. There is no scandal that is not brought, there is no corruption that is not exhibited, there is no hypocrisy that does not go out to the light and there are no sacred cows that cannot touch. The journalists can write, the reporters know his work and the management supports the publishing line separated from the operations of marketing. But the most important thing is that the big newspapers of England are independent. There are no part, like the newspapers of the United States, with honorable exceptions, of big chains.

The big journalistic chains control newspapers, radio, television and cable. The product is the news without controversy, which can be distributed by all the mass media without having legal or governmental problems.
The American people is not stupid. A big education is not needed to realize that the big newspapers of the nation are already not the watchtowers of the system. There is a big quantity of scandals that are not brought, the corruption neither is investigated nor is exhibited, the hypocrisy does not go out to the light and there are sacred cows that cannot touch.
We face at present the biggest economic crisis of last 70 years. The press does not know or does not say why we come to this point, who the culprit was and who is going to pay the broken plates. The wars of Iraq and of Afghanistan have disappeared of the first page of the big newspapers. There are no investigative reporters who describe the reality of the present situation for which the country is happening.
They are writing the réquiem of the big newspapers themselves. There is not the television, the cybernetic network or the economy the cause of his problems. The disappearance of the big newspapers is being caused by these, on having left the duties of the press in a democratic society. Without a free, aggressive and independent press there cannot be freedom
