In this new century, we live in a world that has become smaller and more interconnected than in no other epoch of the history. The oceans and borders drawn in maps are already not any protection from the threats to the economy and the safety of our nation. The terrorists who attacked our country on September 11 conspired in Hamburg, trained in Kandahar and Karachi and threatened to countries of the whole balloon. The cars in Boston and Beijing are melting the layers of Arctic ice that the climatic bosses alter in all sides. The theft of nuclear material of the Soviet Union might provoke the extermination of any city of the Earth. And the imprudent speculation of the bankers of New York and London has caused a global recession that is causing penuries to workpeople and families of the whole world and of the whole United States.
These times bring challenges that threaten the peace and prosperity of each and everyone of the nations, and none can face them alone. That's why, sometimes it is necessary that a President travel abroad in order to protect and to strengthen to our country, here in our homeland. That is what I did this week.
I began my trip assisting to the summit of the Group of 20 (G-20), the countries that they represent to the biggest economies of the world, because we know that the economic success of the United States is inseparable of the global economy. If the people of other countries cannot spend, that means that they cannot buy the goods that we produce here in the United States, what means more loss of work places and more affected families. Scarcely yesterday, we find out that we lost hundreds of thousands of work places more last month, which they join to the millions that we have lost since it began the recession. And if we keep on allowing the banks and other financial institutions of the whole world to act as imprudent and irresponsibly, it affects that to the institutions of our country, because the credit diminishes and the persons cannot obtain loans to buy a house or car, to administer a small enterprise or to pay the university.

The only way of going out of a recession of world scope is with an answer coordinated globally. That's why I like that, after two days of meticulous negotiation, the nations of the G20 have agreed in a series of measurements without precedents that I believe they will mark an important milestone in our efforts to achieve the global economic recovery. All of us are mobilizing ourselves energetically to achieve that our banks realize loans again. All of us are straining for impelling the growth and generating employment. And all of us have come to an agreement to never reform entirely, how earlier in our generation, the regulations of our financial system, a reform that will help to finish with the risky speculation and the abuses of the market that have cost so much to so many people.
Also I met last week the leaders of China and Russia, and we work to forge constructive relations that solve the worries that we have in common, and we were frank some to others in the topics in which we do not agree. The President Hu and I agree that the connection between the economy of China and ours is of big and mutual benefit, and we established a new Economic and Strategic Dialogue between the United States and China. The President Medvedev and I converse about the shared commitment of a world without nuclear weapons, and sign a declaration that places the United States and Russia in way to a new agreement to reduce even more nuclear arsenals. Tomorrow (Sunday, the 5th), I am going to take additional measures to assure that there should no be free nuclear materials for the world and to stop the spread of this lethal weapon.
Because after all, we admit that no place of the planet can construct a defense wall against the threats of the XXIst century, to ignore the needs and worries of other nations. The only way of progressing is by means of shared and persistent efforts to fight the fear and the need anywhere that exists. This is the challenge of our times. And if we advance with valor and decision, I am sure that we will triumph. www.whitehouse.gov
