Queen Núñez still remembers with horror the moments through that he lived next to his husband in New Orleans. |
Queen Núñez of Honduran origin still remembers with horror the day into which his husband changed the blows and the screams into the dirk that led it to remaining 16 days in state of coma. 11 years have happened from that tragic day, his husband is in the jail, but Queen Núñez still drags the psychological aftermath of having been a victim of domestic violence.
“ I have a very strong trauma and cannot have redone my life. To know that he was going to die in hands of a poor wretch does not forget me”, he said to Washington Hispanic, Queen Núñez, who receives psychological services in the Clinic of the People.
As the loss that it incurred in the colon, Queen Núñez has part of the reconstructed stomach what prevents him from obtaining a work that does not affect his health and his absence of concentration has not allowed him to spend the citizenship examination. Núñez came to Washington DC in 2005 as sheltered as a result from the Hurricane Katrina who destroyed New Orleans. Over there they remained his husband imprisoned in the jail and one of his children, therefore Queen Núñez lives alone in Washington DC.
According to the statistics every 19 minutes a crime is committed in the metropolitan area as regards the domestic violence and according to the police of DC 27 per cent of the calls to 9-11 belong to women who are violence victims on behalf of his couples. In what it goes of the year 2008 the Court of the District has expressed 3.000 protection orders.
Against the violence
In the frame of the Month against the Domestic Violence the Latin Agencies of the metropolitan area did called the women so that they learn to recognize the symptoms of the violence and that they do not have fear of denouncing the bully.
“ Our agencies offer confidential services and we are compromised by the women and the children. We have a lot of work for doing because often for the migratory situation the victims are afraid of calling the police, express Karla Ramos, coordinating committee of the program of domestic violence of Mary's Center.
On the other hand it exists the services lack is very big, especially for the persons who do not speak English. For example in the District of Columbia a well-known refuge does not exist as "shelter" culturally and linguistically prepared to receive and to attend to the Hispanic women.
“ I dare to say that there are no resources sufficiently and between we that we represent the agencies are not well organized ourselves. The references system does not work because the only thing that they treat is to get rid of the person who requests the service especially if it is Hispanic. The resources to attend to the victims of domestic violence of Hispanic origin it is still very scarce”, he made sure, Dilcia Molina, the president of the organization Mother Earth in Virginia and coordinating committee of the program of domestic violence of the Clinic of the People.
A telephone emergency line has been established to request help 1-800-799-7233.
The Latin agencies invite to take part this Friday, the 24th of October of the traditional wakefulness and march against the domestic violence that will be realized at 6:30 p.m. The march will begin at the corner of the street 16 and Columbia Rd in Washington DC.
Do not be afraid of Immigration
In last times due to the punitive actions of the service of immigration, the increase of the raids and the agreements that some localities have realized between the local police and the Service of Immigration have generated theirs fear and confusion between the immigrant community.
This situation also believe suspicion therefore many women are afraid to denounce the aggressor for fear to face a deportation.
“ To receive services in the District of Columbia they must only reside in the District and the police do not collaborate with immigration if a person calls to ask for help. The police are prohibited of asking for legal status at the moment of bringing a crime”, made sure George Escobar of the Office of Latin Matters of the Mayor (WAVE, for his initials in English).

| Walter Tejada, president of the Governing body of the county of Arlington, highlighted that in these elections the state of Virginia will be key. |
A group of workpeople and Latin leaders of the metropolitan area met to promote the vote for the democratic candidate Barack Obama and to highlight why “Obama is the man of the change” who needs the Hispanic community.
Regino Romero, cook of the hotel Hilton de Crystal City and single father with three children, indicated Washington Hispanic that is necessary to go out to vote because it is the only way of being able to change the “things that we do not like”.
“ I have to breed three children, it raises the meal, the gasoline and the wages are still equal. Barack Obama comes from a humble family and understands our needs because he has lived in proper meat through our limitations. The Latin Americans we need to Obama because he is who goes to realize the change”, expressed Regino Romero.
It IS been key
To scarce days of the elections, next November 4, the activists did called the whole electorate so that it goes out and exercises his right to vote, especially in Virginia that has turned into the key state.
In Virginia it is believed that 6.000 new voters have registered and it is known that the Latin Americans represent 5 per cent of the whole of the electorate in the state in mention. One hopes that in the elections of November 4 9 million Hispanic voters should go to the urns in the country.
“ Virginia is well coveted in these elections because it represents 13 electoral votes compared with New Mexico, for example, that is provided only with five. Also in the last years a democratic tendency has been seen when Virginia is traditionally a republican, winning from 1964 the republican candidates for the presidency”, he tells to Washington Hispanic, Walter Tejada, president of the meeting of government of the county of Arlington.
“ The democrats we have advanced in Virginia reaching positions chosen by vote earlier occupied by republicans. The Latin Americans we are more involved in the politics and compare what is the candidate who really goes to defend our interests”, he affirms Tiled.
Why Obama
According to the community leaders, Barack Obama represents the change of an administration that has punished the immigrant community and that has not worried for the health and the education of those who more need.
“ Under the republican administration we have persons terrified by the raids, antiimmigrant laws, economic crisis and an unjustified war”, affirms Jaime Contreras, the director of the Place 32BJ for the area of the capital.
For his part, Gustavo Torres, executive director of House of Maryland, showed that in these elections the Latin voters will have the opportunity to do history on having chosen the first immigrant and African American president.
“ Obama did the electoral promise that would approve a migratory reform for his first year of government and we are going to stay awake because this way it is. Let's vote for someone who goes to do the change”, it finished Towers.

Claimants point out that they were not paying his overtime to them. |
A group of workpeople, mostly Hispanics, represented by Brown, Goldstein and Levy, LLP, the Lawyers' Office of Phil Zipin, and The Legal Offices of Jay S. Marks, P.C. presented a legal demand in the federal court of Baltimore, MD, against Annapolis Painting Services - one of the bigger contractors of painting of the region-. The demand alleges that the company, together with his president, Robert Bontempo, Jr., they violated federal and state laws of on wages payment. In June, 2008, the company was an object of a raid of the services of Immigration.
The case was presented by César Obdulio González Corrado, Russell Cain and Adrián Morales in proper name and of other partners in similar situations and who allege that the defendants did not expire in spite of paying to his workpeople “tariff and a half” for hours worked in extra time. It allege also that the company trumped in remunerating his workpeople for works realized before arriving at the work place, as well as also worn-out time traveling between the offices and the places of the works, exits to gather materials, work needed during the hour of the lunch, and for tasks done after his game of the place of work.
“ This case demonstrates the big contrast between the aggressive efforts of the government to fulfill the unmigratory laws and his attitude relaxed towards the respect of the labor protections, ”there expressed Melissa Crow, partner of Brown, Goldstein, and Levy, a lawyers' signature with head office in Baltimore. “The result of this position is that unscrupulous employers as Annapolis Painting Services can take advantage of his workpeople with impunity. We hope that this litigation should help to confront this problem.”
The demand asks for immediate judicial intervention, and for payments for dammages.
