In the context of an exhaustive reappraisal and restructuring of the public schools of Washington DC in search of the educational excellence, mayor Adrian Fenty announced this week the following catalogued step of “critic“, who consists of re-constituting the team of work of six schools; from the directors, teachers, advisers and assistants.
This initiative is part of the Law That No Child Remains Behind (NCLB, for his initials in English) and is a drastic option to achieve real progress in schools that could not have improved the academic level of the pupils.
“ The high quality of the schools is not obtained overnight, and the law NCLB demands that we should take serious steps towards the rehabilitation of schools that continuously fail to reach a suitable annual progress”, expressed Adrian Fenty. “To improve the schools is the only one of the hardware that our administration is using to offer to the students, teachers and the directors a renewal and to help them to create school ambiences where effective learning takes place”, added Fenty.
The reconstitution of the personnel of the schools consite in that mostly the teams of work and teachers will have to request his current position again across a process of interviews with the administration of the school. This intervention allows to the leaders of the schools to choose to a personnel that is really compromised by the academic initiatives and priorities of the school, and in turn that are highly qualified and effective workpeople.
With this measurement one hopes that the pupils should benefit on having had excellent teachers and on having been present at schools well organized where all the members of the team of work share the same vision.
An important point in this reconstitution is that the personnel who are not thought inside the process, that is to say that they should not be hired again, does not lose his work because they have the option to join a team of reservation. They with the help of the office of human resources of DCPS have access to a list of available vacancies, transferences fairs, as well as specializing assistance. These persons will be assigned to another center of work for the next school year.
“ To improve the public schools is a federal obligation and not an option, this coincides with our target to take strategic decisions for the best interest of the pupils and to be able to cover his specific needs”, expressed the chancellor of education of DC, Michelle Rhee.
The reconstitution will become effective after last day of classes, next June 16. The first transference fair will be realized on Saturday, the 16th of May in Columbia Heights Education Campus.
The parents of six involved schools will be notified.

One of the biggest complexes of housing created for persons of low income in the city of Alexandria faces a series of abuses and discriminatory actions that go from excessive cashings, housings in the bad state up to the threat of being evicted from his apartments. For such a reason the tenants and members of the Cooperative of Housing Arlandria Chirilagua (ACHC, for his initials in English) realized a march as a token of protest across which they demanded democratic elections to change completely to the Directorate that at present administers the cooperative.
“ We have years fighting against these abuses. The members of the Directorate must change every year, but for six years a group has taken possession of the Meeting. The tenants mostly we are Hispanic and we have no representation and they consider us to be as ignoramuses and when we ask for an arrangement in our apartments they us do not pay attention and even want to increase the rent”, it expressed to Washington Hispanic, Carlos Moreno of El Salvador, who is a member of the cooperative for 10 years.
During the march realized on Tuesday, the 12th of May it was a question of conversing with the members of the Meeting who were in the administrative office, but they did not agree to give any declaration. The Meeting is integrated by nine members of whom six are permanently and during the last elections three new members managed to enter, but as they affirm themselves that they are not taken into consideration because “we are not majority”.
For the time being nine tenants are in expectation of the decision of the Court to know if they are evicted or not. They were accused for the Meeting of not wanting to pay the extra tariff for 50 dollars for relame person of garbage and 100 dollars for the water service.
The tenants are in expectation of the elections of next September where they hope that the Meeting should be renewed completely for for what they are asking them to allow them to inform his lawyers as observers to avoid aberrations.
ACHC has a critical function in the economic Alexandria development. Many years families of low economic resources; mostly African American and Latin, they have found sure hearths inside the ACHC. Also, they have managed to save many of them sufficiently to buy their own house for the low cost of the ACHC. We cannot give the back to ACHC and allow her to disappear, ”there says Jon Liss, the director of Tenants and Close Workpeople, the organization that handled the campaign in the years ochentas to resist hundreds of evictions of the quarter Chirilagua and which resulted in the ACHC creation
