His occupational training and professional experience in criminal justice, as well as his passion for achieving a positive change in his community it has been the letter of credence of Víctor DelPino, who has turned into the first Hispanic in directing the Unit Antibands of the Office of the General District attorney of the county of Montgomery.
Of Mexican mother and Colombian father, Víctor DelPino was born in Washington DC, but it grew and was educated in Silver Spring. This has allowed him to know the challenges that his community faces, but at the same time to cultivate his desire of projecting his knowledge to the public service.
His appointment was announced by the General District attorney of the State, John McCarthy in the frame of the presentation of the progresses of the Unit Antibands created two years ago.
“ In these two years the Unit Antibands has processed 1.000 cases related to crimes realized by members of a band compared to 77 cases processed in the year before to the creation of this special team of accusing district attorneys”, showed McCarthy.
“ This does not mean that the activity of the bands has increased in the county, but we have improved our aptitude to identify his members when they enter to the system of criminal justice”, tells the District attorney. The DelPino work
More that to accuse, the work of the district attorneys of the Unit Antibands of which DelPino was an active member and now it directs consists of working with the community to educate her and to prepare that the young people enters to the world of the bands.
“ Like district attorneys we work jointly with the police and the persons think that we are only to put prisoner to the whole world when in fact we work with the schools, the parents and the community organizations to create options for our young people”, tells DelPino.
As the first action as chief of the Unit Antibands DelPino points out that it will meet the different leaders of the community to create programs that include more young people of a general and permanent way. This way he thinks about how to support the community informed and involved with the problem of the bands.
“ Happily the problem of bands in Montgomery is not so serious as it it is in other jurisdictions, but we are not going to hope that it should deteriorate to take actions. The prevention is the most important thing. We do not think about how to scare the community but educate”, makes sure DelPino.
On the other hand, DelPino clarified that it is incorrect to think that “all the hooligans, are Hispanic” because in his experience of two years working like district attorney of the Unit Antipandillas has been a witness of that the problem of bands not only belongs to the Latin community but to all the residents. “What happens is that a stereotype has been created after hooligans related with Hispanics. But in fact also African American hooligans exist and anglos”, it finished DelPino.
