At the end of a day in whose course very strong thunderstorms came untied in the region, the state senator Creigh Deeds spoke the night of Tuesday, the 9th, in a Charlottesville hotel, to a group of still astonished journalists for his devastating victory in the democratic primary elections for governor of the state of Virginia.
Up to only three weeks ago, “nobody was giving ball” for his candidacy and someone was not missing that he was suggesting him “an honorable retirement” of the election race, as told one of his assistants.
The local and even international press was following the steps only of others two candidates, who also were enjoying the favor of the surveys.
One of them, Terry McAuliffe, ex-president of the powerful Democratic National Committee, was provided with the important support of the ex-president Bill Clinton, who even accompanied it in several of his campaign tours.
Other, Brian Moran, current state Delegate in Richmond, was in the first place of the opinion polls to the beginning of the contest and was endorsed publicly by members of the prestigious “clan Kennedy”.
The televised debates, the radial interviews, the comments, the mítines, everything was turning concerning these two candidates, who were making use of these opportunities hard criticism threw itself between them, in a real fratricidal struggle.
Meanwhile, Deeds, of 51 years, was advancing with supreme calmness, “without blinking”, entrusted in his centrist proposals. And when they were asking his opponents about his opinion about the support of big national leaders he was answering that he was provided with the adherence of many local leaders. “Finally, these are those who decide the elections”, he was answering.
“Wow!”, it exclaimed Deeds the night of the holiday of the victory, to the beginning of his speech, moderate but firm, in which he promised to defeat, now yes, his republican rival Robert McDonnell, who conquered for ajustadísimo his margin in 2005 for the charge of general attorney.
The flaming democratic candidate for governor of Virginia offered to construct and repair highways, improve the public transport and reduce the taxes. He is considered to be a conservative politician in topics like the use of the firearms, the marriages gay and the death penalty. In that it differed from McAuliffe and They reside, who fought to appear like more leftists one that other.
Next to his wife Pam and his adolescent daughters Rebecca and Susannah, Creigh Deeds he turned out to be again surrounded with “his people”, the leaders of the distant county Bath, and many rural leaders, with whom he celebrated cheerfully the electoral, unexpected victory for many less for him.
“ I knew that it was going to win, and also I trust that the democrats we will conquer the republican candidate in November”, he said between applauses.
Deeds already achieved the first target the night of the same Tuesday, the 9th: McAuliffe and They Reside there were the first ones in recognizing his victory and in promising to reconstruct the partial unit and support it firmly in the decisive November contest.
