Three weeks after the fatidical accident in a train of the Red Line, which caused the death of a driver and nine passengers, the National Meeting of Safety in the Transport (NTSB, for his initials in English) it gave a term of thirty days to the administration of the Meter, so that he answers on additional protections that must be established in the trains service.
The NTSB is in charge of investigating the shock between two trains that took place on June 22 between the stations of Fort Totten and Takoma Park. On Monday, the 13th it announced that the electrical system designed to prepare this type of accidents “is inadequate” and that other safety mechanisms are needed to alert the trains operators when it is necessary.
In an expressed declaration on the same Monday, administration of the Meter promised to dedicate all his efforts to develop the additional protections demanded by the NTSB. Nevertheless, he said that “it is important to know that at present there are no available systems commercially that they might provide to the system of the Meter with the type of alerts that the NTSB has recommended”.
“ Such systems will have to be fictitious”, mentioned for his part the councilman of DC, Jim Graham, who is a president of the Meeting of the Meter. In declarations to the press, Graham pressed to the NTSB to solve the mystery of why the circuit it keeps on failing.
The investigations have determined until now that there was “only one point of flaw” in the system of automatic control of the Meter in the above mentioned sector of the Red Line, which prevented one of the trains from detecting the presence of other, which was stopped in the same route.
Of having worked correctly, he had sent a sign of “zero speed” to the train in march, to stop it automatically. Instead of it, the computers placed it to 59 miles per hour, speed with which it smashed.
The problem is that the flaw continues in the same sector, for more changes that have been done in the corresponding circuits.
