The Attorney general's office of the Republic (PGR) warned on Wednesday, the 27th that there might be more detentions after the discovery of a network of official protection to a cartel of the drugs and that has derived in the apprehension of 28 state and municipal, included officials 10 mayors.
The spokesman of the PGR, Ricardo Nájera, confirmed to the chain Televisa that the 28 involved ones in the protection to the cartel of The Family, in the western Michoacán state, already produce his testimony before the authorities and “depending on how they avenge the declarations and the implications of others, it could be that the Public Department takes decisions to express other orders of presentation and location”.
In advance, nevertheless, he made sure that the governor of Michoacán, Leonel Godoy, “is free of suspicion” and “it neither is part of any investigation, it is not even mentioned in any previous inquiry”.
In a massive operation without precedent, federal and military police officers detained on Tuesday, the 26th the mayors and officials – included Citlalli Fernández, a near assessor of Godoy and ex-secretary of Public Safety - whom they indicate of giving information and protecting The Family, one of six cartels of the drugs recognized by the federal authorities.
The detentions were realized in a simultaneous action in different points of Michoacán, one of most affected by the violence of the drug trafficking.
In September, 2008, the above mentioned state was a stage of the first direct attack against the civil population on the part of the cartels of the drug, when assassins threw two grenades to the people who was celebrating the independence of the country in a square of the city of Morelia.
Other detentions
The operation happened the same day in which the Federal Police announced the apprehension in Michoacán of a state ex-police officer, considered to be an operator of the cartel of The Family, where from he was taking charge of the traffic of drugs and sequestrations in at least five municipalities of the State of Mexico, nearby to the capital.
Along with the state ex-police officer identified like Javier Ortiz “The Arqui”, another 10 persons were captured. Four of the detentions happened in Michoacán and the rest in the State of Mexico.
