One of the biggest stars in the awards of the Academy was born in the northwest of Chicago, was brought to the world by Martín Vega and she prepared for the big night by Eladio González.
In a few weeks, it will be shining in the stage of the Theater Kodak in Hollywood, perhaps in the hands of a tearful Kate Winslet or of a more weeping Mickey Rourke. They will take it as the waist, will lift it to the air and they will be grateful to him to everything the one that helped them to shape his success. All, except Vega and González.
The history of the Oscar 3453 begins with an emptying — the transformation of a metal piece in a man of 34 centimeters (13,5 inches) which bottom reminded to Bette Davis that of his first husband, as tells the legend.
We are in the factory R.S. Owens, a bland building in the Avenue North Lynch, where the statuettes are made from 1983.
The Hispanic worker, Vega, of 40 years, focuses in his own art on having melted bars of an alliance of pewter of top quality in a smelting tank. Then it puts a ladle in the liquid of 780 grades (415 centigrade ones) and slowly it spills it in a steel mold, one of only two never made and the only one that keeps on working. The mold is usually kept in a safe and is extracted only in this season for approximately two days to make 50 Oscars that will send to themselves Hollywood.
Vega inclines slightly the mold and fills it uniformly.
That only takes 13 seconds, and waits about a minute before opening the top part of the mold, hammering it a bit until it becomes detached, revealing to proudly Vega the back of an Oscar of almost four kilos (8,5 pounds).
" Not badly at all to be a 81-year-old man", says Noreen Prohaska, sales manager of Owens and our escort of the day.
Vega extracts the still warm statuette and places it along with other seven, all mouth arrives in a nearby table.
It allows them to cool perhaps one hour then to take some excesses from him with what it looks like a hose piece (or umbilical cord) that goes out of the receptacle where the ruined metal began in the mold.
From now on it 40-year-old González works, in the machine polishing machine. First it uses a small sandpaper, then bigger other one. Forty five minutes later, the Oscar shines.
The 56-year-old recording Louise White, makes sure the Oscar mouth below, with the head against a gum piece "so that we should not give him a migraine", says. The numbers 3-4-5-3 line up in his machine and White, who takes 36 years working for Owens, it uses what looks like a primitive dental auger to plan them.
Giganti dries it with an air hose that shines and sounds like those who are used at the service stations for the tires. Finally, the sleep of any trophy comes: a bath in 24 carats gold, in a packing used for Oscar and only for Oscar.
Then it takes it to the area of assembly, where Bertha Fuentes screws the base covered with bronze, covers the head of Oscar with a plastic bag and places it in a foam box of gum, which gets to other one of pasteboard for his mailing.
