A new center concept for persons of the third age of Hispanic origin that offers housing and social services will open his doors in the District 4 thanks to an initiative of the Educational Organization for Close Latin Americans (EOFULA, for his initials in English). Mayor Adrian Fenty realized the announcement, along with the director of EOFULA, Luis 聲gel Irene, who showed that this center will allow him to attend to a population who at present cannot receive services for lacking the physical space and the necessary resources.

The center has been designed to offer bedrooms to the persons of the third age who have a monthly revenue for 600 dollars or less and it will have an aptitude to receive for less 50 adults. In parallel, these persons will receive services of medical attention, balanced feeding, medicines will be provided, as well as it will develop social activities to keep them active inside the community in which they live.

“ Our grandpas face the barrier of the language and financially they are under the poverty indexes. Of 20 asylums or ‘nursing homes’ that exists in Washington, DC, there does not exist any that is cultural and linguistically adapted for them”, it points out Washington Hispanic, Luis 聲gel Irene, the director of EOFULA.

“ We have developed a new concept where our grandpas share and are active inside his communities”, Irene stands out.

The new center is located in 1330 Missouri Bird. NW and it will have a cost for 7.3 million dollars that includes the area, the construction and the furniture to operate.

“ We hope to be able to open the doors of the new center in 2010. Everything will depend how much takes us to collect the necessary funds. We are employed at present at the planeaci鏮 project”, pointed out Luis 聲gel Irene.

“ They see us like a model because we would be the first center that offers services and permanent housing to the Latin population of the third age”, makes sure Irene.

On the other hand, the director of EOFULA expressed that it will have to work with the city to find the ways of subsidizing the cost of the housing for these persons. “We must think that our grandpas often only receive 300 monthly dollars and it is necessary to help them to pay the housing. The authorities must admit that she is one of the most vulnerable populations of the city”, added Luis 聲gel Irene.

At present, EOFULA serves to 600 Latin Americans of the third age annually and it is the only center that offers services of quality cultural and linguistically adapted for the Hispanics. 40 per cent of the population of EOFULA are major than 80 years and they come from 19 countries of Latin America.
