Safety and heroism

The facts happened on Wednesday, the 10th in the Museum of the Holocaust, that epilogaron painfully with the death of a heroic guard of safety victim of the bullets shot by a man of racist ideology, brings the topic of the weapon again to the public debate.

Paradoxically, the fatal incident registered on the following day that the city lost a new opportunity to gain his right to vote, a wish of long byline. It did not achieve it although several Congressmen promised to endorse this right, "any time" the leaders of the city were withdrawing his opposition to an amendment that, of be approving, would leave aside the laws of strict control of weapon in the District.

This maneuver of “takes and daca” it could not be accepted. That's why one preferred to wait for a new opportunity, and prevent the amendment – already approved by the Congress and the Senate in February - from entering validity in DC, with all his consequences.

The democratic councilman At-Large of the District, Phil Mendelson, to the ripeness president of the Judicial Committee of the metropolitan municipality, has taken the topic straight on having pointed out that “the shooting in the Museum of the Holocaust is a tragic example of why the amendment on the use of the weapon it is a fatal proposal for DC”. Mendelson abounds in his argumentation, on having said that “the Congress does not need any more evidence than the tragedy of this Wednesday, which happened few blocks of the White House, for the justification of strict laws of weapon in the District, which protect the President, the Congressmen, the residents of DC and million tourists who travel to Washington DC every year, to visit his monuments and other places, like the Museum of the Holocaust”.

Obviously it is necessary to preserve the safety of the city. The mayor of DC, Adrian Fenty, has been very clear in adding that “the District of Columbia keeps on being an open and sure place” for the population and his visitors.

In this occasion, we cannot spend for high the lesson of heroism left by the official Stephen Tyrone Johns, whose immolation, together with the rapid reaction of his partners of weapon, they prevented from producing a slaughter to him, between almost two thousand visitors who were attesting this day the museum.

Washington Hispanic also pays tribute to him and, at the same time, he hopes that the debate on the use of the weapon should take as the first consideration the life and the safety of the population.
