As well as the calendar considers a special date to celebrate the Day of the Mother, this third Sunday of June the Father's day is commemorated, especially in the western hemisphere. Said anniversary it has been instituted to produce homage to all the parents in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The same happens in most of the countries of our Latin America.

It has covered a lot of water under the bridges since an American woman, Sonorous Smart Dood, threw the idea of the celebration. That way he wanted to honor the memory of his progenitor, Henry Jackson Smart, a veteran of the civil war that enviudó when his wife died during the childbearing of his sixth son, in a rural farm of the state of Washington; from there from now on, he turned into “father and mother” of the family and took charge of the education of six children. The grateful daughter, thought that his father had been “the whole example to be continued” and in 1909 he proposed publicly the date of the birth of his father, June 19, to celebrate the Father's day. In 1910 the date was celebrated for the first time, although restricted to the Spokane area, in the same state of Washington, frontier with Canada.

They had to happen another 14 years (1924) so that finally the president Calvin Coolidge was supporting the initiative to establish a national day of the father. In 1966 the president Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation that was declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's day in the United States.

Almost immediately, most of the Latin-American countries joined the proposal and fixed the same date to celebrate the anniversary. A few countries celebrate it in different dates, between them Bolivia and Honduras, which established it on March 19, day of San Jose, father of Jesus de Nazareth. Both countries continue the catholic tradition, as Spain. While, Dominican Republic commemorates it last Sunday of July while in Brazil he commemorates the Father's day every second Sunday of August.

Washington Hispanic joins this celebration, and in this date it produces his very special homage to the immigrant parents, who from his fatherlands have come to these grounds, and who like Henry Jackson Smart are “the whole example to be continued” since they fight every day, of a tireless way, for improving the situation of his families, in search of which the American dream becomes true for the present and future generations.
