Joined against the crime

With big approval and after several members' attempts of the council for pushing it back, the mayor of Washington DC, Adrian Fenty finally signed the emergency Law Against the Crime approved last June.

Although the law does not include any of the original amendments presented by the mayor, especially the related one to the bands, the legislation is considered to be the first big step to implement more strict rules against the criminal activities and to guarantee a major safety for the residents and visitors of DC that we had already begun seeing some local communities in the city like real grounds of nobody.

The controversy on the content of the law did that his voting was late in the DC council, but apparently the shooting happened in the Museum of the Holocaust that it put in check to the police and received the life of a safety official accelerated the process.

This new emergency law establishes more strict norms for those who possess firearms, increases the minimal judgments for certain felonies and criminalizes the persons who tackle a motorcar where a firearm of an illegal way takes. The legislation indicates also severe hardships for using a vehicle stolen to commit a crime, the creation of a persons' record that have committed some crime with the use of a weapon and facilitates the process so that the district attorneys decide the detention of a person who should commit a violent crime before it is taken to judgment.

Fix one of the points for Fenty it is the eradication of 87 criminal bands that is estimated they coexist in the District, but precisely the amendment that gives powers to the district attorneys to begin civil charges in a Court against supposed bands members was pushed back by nine votes against four. All these new rules were created by the intention of answering to the strong wave of violence that crosses the District of Columbia. Now, it will be necessary to wait for the results and that the written in the articles of association and amendments should be translated in sure and free streets of violence where the young people finds alternatives that keep them removed from the bands and criminal activities. But, also it is true that there will only be achieved if a work is realized as a whole, where laws, police officer, schools and family parents take the reins of the problem and commit themselves in giving solutions.
