When is a person born in the United States, of parents with American citizenship, considered to be an immigrant?
When it is from Puerto Rico, seemingly. The newly concluded hearings on the nomination of the jueza Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court of the country put in judgment cloth the knowledge that some legislators and several means have on Puerto Rico and his relation with the United States. The periodic New York Steal, of the same hometown of Sotomayor, it had to retract on having said in the beginning of the hearings that Sotomayor is the “first American generation of parents who emigrated from Puerto Rico”. Big irony for a newspaper of a city where so many persons of the island reside. Even some that were supporting it like tremendous example of what it is possible to achieve in spite of studying and working hard considered her to be incorrectly a daughter of an immigrant family. During the vote of assertion of Tuesday, the 28th in the Judicial Committee of the Senate, after almost two hours of speeches on the part of the legislators, the democratic senator Ben Cardin of the state of Maryland affirmed that it was much impressed by the jueza and his record of “immigrant of Puerto Rico”. Because certainly for Cardin and many who do not know, all the Latin Americans are immigrant.
And from when is well to pronounce badly a surname thousand and times? These legislators can pronounce Blagoyevich and Shalikasvili without problems, but it touches them the seemingly complicated Sotomayor and they do not know what to do. At this point he has no sense.
Since that get accustomed, because everything seems to indicate that Sotomayor will do history as the Hispanic person first in coming to the court of major importance in the country, despite what there want the conservatives, who insist on his absence of objectivity although they do not have any evidence of this criticism. One hopes that the Plenary meeting of the Senate should vote on his nomination for the next week, and it already has the sufficient votes to be confirmed. A real historical achievement of which the whole Latin community must be proud, is immigrant or not.
Meanwhile, it continues the crisis in the Central American country of Honduras, with the laid down president Manuel Zelaya asking the American government to freeze the bank accounts of “the participants in a coup” and to keep on pressing the new government of his country presided by Roberto Micheletti. The administration Obama has already withdrawn several million dollars in military assistance and it revoked the visas of several diplomats here in Washington, but Zelaya wants that the United States is stronger in his denunciations and criticism of the government.
“ Quite what they (the participants in a coup) steal from themselves in Honduras is going to be deposited by them to Miami. There they have apartments, business, societies with banks", it accused Zelaya from Nicaragua, where it is while they continue the negotiations for his return to Honduras.
