What more do they want? This is the question that many followers of the jueza Sonia Sotomayor were rising to themselves about the vote to take it to the court of major importance of the country. “The fact is that I do not understand the republicans”, affirms the democratic senator Robert Menéndez, of New Jersey. “She is the person nominated to the court most qualified in one century, and the republicans who are opposed to her stick to a few comments, do not concentrate on his judicial decisions, are not fixed in his judicial politics, and say that they are against him. If they do not support to this nomination, of so moderate politics, whom they will support”, mentioned Menéndez hours before the vote.
And there is the detail, as famosamente was saying the actor Cantinflas. Unless it is not a question of a comedy. It is something extremely important that the conservatives are not taking seriously, point out the followers of Sotomayor, who will happen to be the first person of Hispanic origin in the history of the Supreme Court. Senator Menéndez, one of two Latin senators in the Upper House, says that, certainly, the people should pay attention on whom they vote for her and who not.
“ This criticism in his against already says to me what believe (the republicans) of the Latin community”. In a press conference in the federal acropolis, Menéndez said to be "infuriated" by the criticism against Sotomayor. “I respect those who really have a serious criticism on a nomination, but nothing of what I have seen says to me that these are serious criticism. Simply they want to take the opposite one to the president Obama and to be opposed to any thing that he does or says”.
It is a politics of "not" to everything who will have a tremendous impact in other matters, including the topic of a migratory reform, supported the senator.
He mentioned that he hopes that there should be two-party support in the topic, but simultaneously it indicated that this fanaticism of saying to him "not" to everything what the present democratic majority does not paint well for a good and serious discussion of the topic. “I have gone here (in the Congress) a lot of time and it does not place many trust in me to listen to the comments of those who are opposed to the topic and attack the community saying even ugly things of the immigrants”. This opposition to everything on the part of the republicans, says Menéndez, is not healthy for the country.
For his part, the republicans affirm that these comments are "typical" of the democrats, but it is necessary to admit that they could not have presented only one serious argument to be opposed to Sotomayor. They admit themselves that his judicial decisions do not indicate that it has put his personal opinion over the law.
Several that are opposed, like senator John McCain, of Arizona, and senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, of Texas, they face fortresses primary inside his party, him for his reelection to the Senate and her for governor. Obviously they have decided that the support to his conservative base is much more important than the support of the Latin vote in his respective native states. Partly it the same Latin voters have the fault in these states where they shape an important percentage of the potential electorate although a minimal percentage of those who really go to the polls. And there is the detail, and more it demonstrates from what it goes on when the people do not go out to vote.
