The desire to capture a work that lasts in the history of Washington DC and turns into an artistic and cultural expression that transmits a message to the future generations has been the engine that has impelled to the Salvadoran artist, Karla Rhodes, to create and execute a gigantic mural in the street Calvert to the northwest of the city.

This project of public art arises like a sleep of the artist, who, on having traveled to Mexico, remained impressed by the murals of artist Diego Rivera.

“ Immediately it came to my mind to capture something so that it lasts in the history of Washington DC. I want to leave a mark, that I am Salvadoran, that I am Latin and with this mural to transmit a message of perseverance and dedication”, he said to Washington Hispanic, Karla Rhodes.

And, the fact is that to create and to execute a mural of 60 feet wide for 20 feet high is not easy at all and many resources are needed. In this sense the mural has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the Commission of Art of Washington DC and of the restaurant It Sucks Ayesha's, who share with Karlísima his passion for the art.

“ I requested funds the Commission of Art of DC and they granted me 10.000 dollars and then the restaurant Sucks Ayesha's sedió his wall to give life to my work and also it donated 10.000 dollars to initiate the project”, tells Karlísima.

Now the artist needs the help of the community and of the private enterprise that they want to support his sleep to reach this work of art that tries to turn into a real postcard and center of tourist attraction of the city of Washington DC.

The mural titled “Keep Driving On” ("Goes forward") represents 10 presidents and the principal monuments of the city as there are the Acropolis and the White House.

“ This mural will turn into a cultural legacy and at the same time the persons will know that it is a work of art realized by Latin hands, by an artist who does not give up and I am sure that I will specify my sleep”, affirms Karlísima.

For his part the Commission of Art pointed out that the fund dedicated to Karlísima to personal title also they deliver it to organizations without ends of lucre that present some project of public art.

“ The Commission of Art of DC is much satisfied of being able to take art to the residents. The place in itself where it is the mural is very visible and it creates an ambience artistically friendly”, pointed out Lionell Thomas, sub the director of the Commission of Art of DC.

Janet Menbreño lives through odyssey in Washington, DC
With shackle in the ankle, he looks for his mother

With a sadness visage, Janet Menbreño declares Washington Hispanic and asks them to help her to look for his mother who traveled more than 20 years ago from El Salvador to the United States. Photos: Osmín Herrero / Washington Hispanic

He is 27 years old but it takes an impressive sufferings load: his father died in the civil war, his housing in El Salvador was set fire, it was violated by members of the "crowds" and now it is forced to use an electronic migration ankle-high sock. Otherwise, it hangs over her a deportation order.

As if this was small, his mother Maria Montes, it left it 22 years ago, when she, Janet Menbreño Montes was only five years old.

“ I came to DC not long ago, asking for the name of her, for if someone should see it”, he said. With this target, Janet came to this region to the house of his aunt Rosa, who lives in Alexandria (Virginia), but it was stopped along with a young woman who was looked by the migration agents. There it discovered that she had also a deportation order for not having come to a court in Miami for a minor absence.

“ Now I want only to find my mom, of whom I have never known. The last time that I saw it, when I was much a girl, said to me that it was coming to this country to help me, but I did not know already any more of her. Now I need it more that never”, he affirmed, with the eyes at the edge of the tears.

Janet, in declarations to Washington Hispanic, said that he did not want to return to El Salvador, “because I do not want to die in my country and wish them to help me to remain in the United States”.

On this matter, it told that in El Salvador “the crowds were looking for me and they follow me looking”.

“ Since I was studying at night, they caught me and violated me. Even in a holiday at which my uncle was present because his son was going to marry, a few black's men came and they began to shoot. I was with him and knew that the shots were for me, since they would do up to the impossible thing to drag me to the crowd, and if it was not doing it they would kill me”.
“ That's why – it added - I am afraid for my life if I return, since, on having been, they will try to kill me, as they did finally with my uncle, who practically died for my fault”.

The woman remembers that after being arrested by the migration agents “I was shut up in the fourth cold for 72 hours and thought that it was not just since I had not done badly at all”.

They placed the shackle so that it does not go to other states but remains in the field of DC, Maryland or Virginia, while he waits for his appointment in the court next November 10.

“ What it spends there is not in my hands and not that I will do, but I do not want to return to El Salvador”, continued Janet, who asks the authorities of the ICE to help it in this singular case. “I need to work honourably and find my mother, because if they deport me to my country the 'crowds' they will kill me, as they murdered my uncle, who was the one that was helping me economically”.

“ I do not have to anybody there that I rested and if I risked coming to this country it is to find my mother Maria and to start working; (the authorities of migration) I ask them to touch him the heart”, it begged.

His aunt Rosa, who is Maria's sister, said that his niece Janet Menbreño born in Sensuntepeque, of the Salvadoran department of Huts, “is a humble girl, she is not by any means an aggressive person”.

“ What more he wanted – it added - is that there was already someone who helps us in case of her, which is difficult, I know it, but there must be specialists who give us a hope so that she does not return to El Salvador, because there the situation is very ugly”.

Rose also invoked those who meet his sister Maria that they should bring his whereabouts or should warn it so that it goes to the reunion with his daughter Janet, “who the search and he needs it to relieve these hours of pain”.

Zoellick. "The countries will adopt actions that fit to his needs, like the clipping in the money-market rates that the central banks of the world adopted this week", it indicated.

But, affirming that "there was no magic recipe" to solve the crisis, Zoellick made to notice that the actions that the G-7 adopts "will need of time to supply effect".

" The G-7 needs to work as a whole to arrange the financial, economic and regulatory systems that they have trumped", affirmed Zoellick.
Zoellick indicated that 28 countries, principally in the Africa, were "highly vulnerable in the fiscal field" and that another 44 million persons will suffer of malnutrition this year as result of the high prices of the food.

" We cannot allow a financial crisis to turn into human crisis", it supported.
