22-year-old Manuel Ruiz and Alice Tito of 21 have something in common: to feel proud to have graduated of the University and to have the mission to share his experiences and knowledge for the development of his communities. They are two of the graduated students who took part in the special ceremony to celebrate the graduation of the Hispanic students of the University of Maryland, on Wednesday, the 20th of May.
This celebration is realized for five consecutive years and the intention is to highlight the presence of the Hispanic students and to promote the importance of which more and more Latin they could attend to the University. This year the president of Hispanic Heritage Foundation, José Antonio Tijerino was the guest of honor and he shared his experience as ex-pupil of the University of Maryland.
“ In the University of Maryland only we have 5 to 6 per cent of Hispanic students and this event the realizamospara to demonstrate that we are present and that we fight to be better. This year there take part of the special celebration 75 postgraduates of college, baccalaureate, mastery and doctorate”, expresses Ronald Molina, coordinator of the event.
“ Yes one can”
Of Salvadoran mother and Mexican father, Manuel admits that he was not a very good pupil in the school and that it graduated of the secondary one with grades that did not allow him to deposit directly the university, but thanks to the support of his older brother he decided to devote himself more to the study and turn into the pride of the family, to the being the first one who graduates of the university in the United States.
“ I grew only next to my mother in California and came to this area at the age of 15. In contrast to other students I had to go first to the college to reach the grades and to gain access to the University, but here I am, and have just graduated in business and Latin studies”, tells Manuel Ruiz.
With regard to the financing of the top studies, considered one of the biggest barriers between the Latin students, Manuel makes sure that yes money exists to help across scholarships of the state, but also of private foundations, what happens is that they do not look for them.
“ In my five years of study I did not have to ask for loans because he was looking for scholarships and was helping me working half a time. The Latin Americans we have an advantage that for being considered to be minorities more opportunities of this type exist, but often we do not look for them and this money gets lost”, affirms Manuel, who now with an occupational and professional training will look for the way of overturning his experience and his knowledge for benefit of his community.
Alice Tito of Uruguayan parents in contrast to Manuel tells that it was always much dedicated to his studies and that to the beginning he was feeling many frustration because in his school, which was predominantly Anglo-Saxon, he could not gain access to the classes with honors. “From girl he wanted to demonstrate to my partners and teachers that I also was ready and my biggest challenge was always to go to the University. My parents supported me very much, but really it was my desire those that they led me to keep on studying”, tells Alice Tito, who graduated with a title in history emphatically in Latin America.
For her also one of the biggest barriers was the money, but it points out that since it was in the secondary school it quarreled on the available scholarships.

The notification about the closing of several hundreds of “car dealers” (vehicles concessionaires with exemption), on the part of the manufacturers Chrysler and General Motors (GM) fell down like a bomb between Thursday, the 14th and Friday, the 15th in the whole nation.

Strong protections for the consumers and a major control on the companies of credit cards this was for what the president Barack Obama asked to the Congress and this week obtained an immediate answer, on having been approved by wide majority in the Senate and later in the House of Representatives, the Project of Law for the Reform of Credit cards. The new regulation establishes that the companies of credit cards must inform his client 45 days earlier if he decides to increase the money-market rate and explain why.

One of the most prominent corners of the Spanish gastronomy in Washington has just fulfilled 20 years.
The famous Bar of the Halberdier, property of the Group Lezama and located in the street 18 with the Ist, in Washington DC, it celebrated with property his two decades of hakes with green sauce, tripe to the of Madrid one and wines of character that have added up to the culinary offer that offers the city.
But few ones know that the bar was caused by a priest, the father Luis Lezama, who conceived the idea of creating a gastronomic place of the first level that was devoting itself to classic recipes of Spanish meal. Like that was born the first bar in Madrid, in 1974.
I count shortly, his first restaurant was successful that had the opportunity to open one more pair in different leases of Spain.
Then, in 1989, the Spanish Secretariat of Commerce him approached with the idea of opening a restaurant of the same type in the capital of the United States.
The rest is a history.
With his two decades in Washington, the father Lezama has seen changing the city, which he recognizes is one of his favorite places.
“ Washington was much less cosmopolitan in this epoch in spite of being a capital. But with the time there have come many offices that earlier were in New York, the lobistas have increased and the city has taken a more international character. In Washington I feel very at ease, it is a city that I adore and it is very cozy”, he says.
Lezama has been a journalist, a writer, restorer, businessman and certainly priest, since now he practises in the Parish of Santa Maria Blanca in Montecarmelo, Madrid.
The interesting of his person is that it has a different perspective to be a businessman. But eye, in these times in which the capitalism is hardly questioned, Lezama does not meet like capitalist in the absolute thing, in spite of having conceived a managerial group that, in 2006, invoiced 15 million euros.
“ I am not considered to be a capitalist because I have anything in property. Everything is in property of a foundation that brings the people with whom it works and the public. I have not bought to myself an apartment, have a farm, neither a yacht, nor a personal caprice and use revenue cars. This is one of the successes of our company, to have developed everlasting the value of the human capital and to have re-invested in these facilities that are seen and in these people who has face and word. And finally in something that for us has been a leit motiv that is the innovation”, says the priest.
In spite of everything, the Lezama excellent thing his emphasis is exactly in creating groups of work that are not seen only in productivity terms, but like worthy persons who raise the value of an organization. “We do not grow according to the business that present you but in function to the human teams that you create. Here one thinks about values and persons. In other organizations the box is checked and only the profitability of the person who works. Here we are according to the ideas”, it concludes.
